Suggestions for mixes engineers

As guidelines for your next project (opinions vary, but these suggestions are unlikely to be challenged by any experienced audio professional) please consider the following suggestions:

Tasteful compression on individual instruments is fine but
don’t normalise, compress, limit or eq your stereo mix at the output before you give it to me. The mixes should not peak over OdBFS and if they “look” soft on your editor after the mix-down - DON”T TURN IT UP (especially if you have worked in 24 BIT from start to finish)!

** /adj/ 1 (use attrib) of or for music.
2 sounding pleasant like music.

Mix down to 24 bit 48 kHz format and supply it to me on a CDR.

Use a de-esser during mixing if necessary!

Maintain the balances between vocal sibilence and cymbals and other high frequency instruments throughout the whole track - don’t let one get too much louder than the other during a chorus for example.

The same goes for bass instruments, use adequate compression and make sure bass guitar levels are comparable to bass drum levels without swamping the bass drum. If the bass guitar is mixed too loud you will lose punch from the kick-drum and if the kick drum is too loud the track will sound thin.
